Vilagarcía, placed at the back of the Arousa bay, can be
proud of its beaches, with quiet and not too cold waters –comparing
with other Galician bays-. The main beach of the town, awarded with
de EU Blue Flag, is A Concha-Compostela. During the summer not only
Vilagarcía neighbours, but also people from inland areas,
visit this beach, attracted by its optimal commodities and its good
facilities: in fact, it was because of the great influx of people
from Santiago that the beach was called A Compostela. The Concha-Compostela
beach is located between the urban centre of Vilagarcía and
Carril. It is nearly two kilometres long. The south part –the
closest to the town centre- has a pinewood, a viewpoint and a garden;
it is known as La Concha (The Shell) because of the shape of the
beach. The middle and north part, where you can find a spa and a
park, is called A Compostela. Parallel to the beach there is a seaside
promenade, which connects the towns of Vilagarcía and Carril.
The
beach has had, since 1996, the Blue Flag of the UE, which awards
the environmental quality and the commodities of the beaches.
It has several showers, rubbish bins, toilets, fountains, kiosks
and bars.
The cleaning of the beach is daily made, using specific machinery,
and the quality of its waters is periodically verified trough
analysis done by the Consellería de Sanidade (Regional
Health Authority). During the summer, professional lifeguards
take charge of the vigilance and rescue on the beach.
Concha-Compostela is an urban beach, in which take place, during
the summer, several entertainments. It has two children’s
game areas, one in the beach and the other one in the Compostela
garden. It has parking facilities in Rosalía de Castro
Avenue, parallel to the beach, and in front of the old railway
station. It also has many bars and restaurants in its surroundings.
In the summer, the beach receives a lot of visitors; every day,
between 5.000 and 6.000 people –even more on weekends- go
to the Concha-Compostela. But the beach can also be enjoyed in
the winter, strolling up and down the seaside promenade or resting
in its quiet gardens.
Although this is the most visited beach of the municipality,
it is not the only one. Neighbours from Bamio, Carril and Vilaxoán
have their own beaches; they are small but they have basic facilities,
and they are also used for the shellfishing.
