The foundation “Ruta Xacobea do Mar de Arousa e Ulla”
(sea and river pilgrim’s way to Santiago), in which are integrated
17 councils of both sides of the Arousa bay and the riversides of
the Ulla river, organizes every year a pilgrimage. The aim of this
event is to commemorate the passage of the corpse of the Apostle
Santiago from Jaffa (Palestine) to Iria Flavia, town from where
it was, according to the tradition, carried to Compostela. The trip
is carried out every year in August, starting from one of the municipalities
of the Arousa Bay. Councils and institutions provide travellling
facilities to people who want to join the travel, and so neighbours
and authorities can go over the first Jacobean Route –because
this was not a route open by the pilgrims, but the original one-.
This activity has been carried out since 1965.
The foundation “Ruta Xacobea do Mar de Arousa e Ulla”,
which has been declared “of cultural interest” by
Xunta de Galicia, organizes several activities, such as conferences,
literary competitions and investigation contests. This organization
is aimed to promote the values of Arousa bay and Ulla river, in
the artistic, cultural, gastronomic and tourist fields.
