In
the seafaring town of Carril, most of the fiestas take place in
July: El Carmen (16th of July), El Apóstol (25th of July)
and San Fidel (the Sunday after the Apóstol) are the three
main appointments, although there is also a party in August, which
is San Roque. The annual festival of the Virgen del Carmen, patron
of the sailors, is experienced here with deep devotion. The most
outstanding religious service is the sea procession that takes
place in the afternoon. The image of the virgin –which is
believed to protect the sailors- is taken on a ship, followed
by several boats while, from the bank, hundreds of people see
their journey.
The Apostle is other of the festivities that you can experience
with great devotion in Carril. The most remarkable act that takes
place on this day is the Sword Dance, in which participate several
young men of the town. The party is completed with the parade
of giants and bighead figures, the music of the band and the street
performance of brass bands.
San Fidel is the last popular party of July in O Carril. To
honour the Italian saint open-air night parties and folk exhibitions
are celebrated.
