To
go into the Arousa bay is essential to get to know Vilagarcía.
From the beginning, the town has been very related to the sea
and to the maritime and fishing activities. The presence of the
Catalan businessmen that, during the 18th century, settled down
in the municipality to establish the first salting industries
-taking advantage of the favourable conditions of its port and
the richness of its coast- was the origin of the development of
the Galician canning industry. This fact contributed essentially
to promote the city growth. The relationship between Vilagarcía
and the sea was intensified in the last years of the 19th century
and the first years of the 20th century, thanks to the trade relations,
by sea, with America, trough the harbour of Carril.
To know better the sea of Arousa, as much in its surface as in
its bottom, several private initiatives that allow us to discover
the bay have appeared during the last years.
