 parks and gardens

Vilagarcía has many parks and gardens that make it into a human and pleasant city, in which it is easy to live. The offer of green areas, greatly improved in the last years, was increased in 2002 with the opening of a new garden in the old fairground of Fexdega, near the yachting harbour. The park is dedicated to the memory of the Spanish poet Miguel Hernández. Twelve compositions of the writer from Orihuela decorate several parts of the park, which has an extension of 12.000 square metres and is divided into different areas (forest, camellias, meadow, etc.)

The Enrique Valdés Bermejo Park, with an area of 12.000 square metres, is the one with most botanical richness in the municipality. Its origins go back to the first decades of the last century, when the dukes of Terranova and Medina de las Torres decided to transform part of the land of its property into a garden with a wide range of exotic species. Some years ago, this garden became a property of the council, which decided to devote it to the public use. Some of its trees are only specimen, according with the files of the Forest Investigation Centre at Lourizán (Pontevedra). The Environment Department of the town council organizes guided visits for groups in order to provide an easier knowledge of this area.

Another landscaped area that deserves to be visited is the Compostela Park, by the beach. The spot includes a green area with several trees of great size that give a very pleasant shade in the summer, a fenced area for the children’s games and lawn. Beside the garden there are toilets for the visitors of the beach and the park.

One of the most frequented parks in Vilagarcía is A Xunqueira, located next to the Vista Alegre convent. It is a modern and urban place, with a great part of paved ground dedicated to avenues and courts, which can also serve as an open-air auditory with scenery and stands. It also has a riverside promenade shaded by big horse chestnut trees and a lawn area, which young people usually use as a meeting place.

Similar to the previous one, although a few years older, is the Centenario garden. It is placed besides the sea. A central avenue that leads to one of the docks of the wharf divides the park in two parts: a landscaped area with flowerbeds and pergolas and, on the other side, an area with children’s games and a skating rink. There is also a promenade by the sea with benches and palm trees.

O Cavadelo park is very near, on the other side of the harbour road. It is located over an underground car park. It is a modern precinct, in which you can practice roller hockey and skating, since there is a hockey court, a street circuit and a half pipe. The Council Tourism Office is on one side of the park.

Other central green areas are Praza de Ravella garden, in front of the town hall, and the Praza de España garden, opposite the parochial church. They both have several deciduous trees of great size that provide nice shade in summer and allow sunlight to pass in winter. They are quiet places, ideal for the rest and the talk of the adult people, which in Praza de España is organized around the fountain and in Praza de Ravella, around the central avenue.
