To
get an extensive survey of Arousa bay and Vilagarcía municipality,
it is advisable to visit the viewpoint at the mount Meda (646
metres). Situated in the limit of Vilagarcía with the neighbouring
councils of Catoira and Caldas, it is easily recognised, because
in its top there are some TV masts. From this height you can contemplate
the river Ulla in its final stretch and even the West Towers -remains
of constructions made to defend the population from the Norman
invasions-, which are in the municipality of Catoira and serve
as a setting for the famous Romería Vikinga (Viking Festival).
You will also see most of the Arousa Bay, with Sálvora
Island in its mouth, as well as O Ullán and O Salnés
valleys.
From here, it is possible to arrive, on foot,
to the near viewpoint at the mount Xiabre, within the municipality
of Vilagarcía. The height of this hill allows us to gaze
at a great extension of the Arousa bay, with its perfectly lined
up wooden bateas (frameworks for the breeding of mussels) and,
at the bottom of the mountain, Vilagarcía, with its urban
centre and its scattered village settlement. Besides, visitors
can enjoy themselves in the wide recreational area of Fontefría,
with tables, spits, etc. Both Meda and Xiabre viewpoints have
access trough Calle San José, very near the Avenida Rosalía
de Castro, which connects Vilagarcía and Carril, or else
trough the direct access to the motorway, in O Pousadoiro.
One of the most beautiful views of Vilagarcía
and its bay is the one that presents Carril viewpoint. From this
place you can contemplate the estuary of the river Ulla with the
island of Cortegada, of lush vegetation, in the foreground, and
in the background, the north shore of the bay and the Barbanza
hills. This is a perfect place to see the sunset, when the horizon
is coloured in reds, oranges and yellow shades. You can get to
this viewpoint trough the street that starts from Santiago Apóstol
church, in Carril.
To
see Vilagarcía from the opposite side, it is necessary
to approach Mount Lobeira viewpoint, placed in front of the aforementioned
and whose top belongs to the neighbouring council of Vilanova.
To arrive to this viewpoint, it is necessary to follow the road
to Pontearnelas: halfway there is a diversion indicated with a
road sign. At the end of this diversion, you have to leave the
car in a car park that has vigilance during Easter and summer,
and then, to climb a rustic flight of steps -of about 200 stairs-
that takes to the summit of the mountain. The viewpoint is built
over the remains of an old pre-roman settlement and later castle,
the scene of the disputes between the queen Doña Urraca
and the archbishop Gelmírez. At the end of 19th century
it was raised a cross in this place; this memorial pay tribute
to the victims of the sea and particularly the crew that died
in the shipwreck of the “Serpent”, the ship of the
British Navy, in 1896. From this point you can see the mouth of
the Ulla River, the Arousa Bay and most of O Salnés valley;
on the clear days, it is even possible to see, in the distance,
the rocky profile of Ons and Onza islands, in the Pontevedra bay.
